Job Title: Senior Software Architect
Location: St. Louis, MO
Company: Onyx 360
Job Type: Full-Time
Travel: As required up to 20%

About the Role
At Onyx 360, we are reimagining how industry designs, tests, and runs systems that power the world – through simulation that connects imagination with reality. Our work bridges the digital and physical, turning engineering theory into real-world performance.

We are seeking a Senior Software Architect to lead the development of innovative solutions that enhance the delivery, impact, and maintainability of Onyx 360’s simulation services. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for defining the technical roadmap, building and managing a development team, and creating tools and methodologies that reduce engineering effort, augment simulation value, and improve the efficiency of maintaining deployed systems.

In collaboration with project teams and the Simulation Consultant, you will shape the technology strategy, drive innovation, and ensure that Onyx 360 stays at the forefront of industrial simulation services — all while complementing existing software offerings in the market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the technology roadmap to improve simulation delivery, optimize system value, and streamline maintenance and support processes.
  • Lead a small, high-performing team to design, develop, and release tools, automation, and enhancements that complement existing industrial simulation platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with Simulation Consultants and project teams to identify pain points, inefficiencies, and opportunities for innovation.
  • Drive adoption of best practices for software development, release management, and deployment in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
  • Ensure all technological solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly with commercial simulation software and plant systems.
  • Prioritize initiatives based on impact to project delivery efficiency, system reliability, and client value.
  • Serve as the technical authority for the engineering team, mentoring developers and ensuring high-quality, maintainable solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to maintain a competitive edge and inform roadmap decisions.

Who You Are

  • You are a visionary technology leader who understands both industrial processes and the needs of engineering teams delivering complex simulation projects.
  • You thrive at the intersection of strategy and execution — setting the roadmap while staying hands-on enough to guide development and make key technical decisions.
  • You excel at translating project needs into innovative, practical tools and methods that increase efficiency and value.
  • You are collaborative, able to partner with Simulation Consultants, project engineers, and leadership to align technology with delivery and client outcomes.
  • You are motivated by impact — designing systems and solutions that make engineering faster, easier, and more effective while complementing existing industrial software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in technology development, software engineering, or process engineering with hands-on experience in industrial simulation or automation.
  • Strong understanding of process engineering fundamentals (chemical, petrochemical, refining, life sciences, mining, etc.).
  • Experience with leading software or technology development teams in a project-driven environment.
  • Expertise in software architecture, development, and release management practices.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor, inspire, and grow a small technical team.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with commercial industrial simulation platforms (Emerson, Honeywell, Rockwell, etc.).
  • Knowledge of automation, control systems, and industrial protocols.
  • Experience with cloud-based tools, virtualization, and orchestration to support development and simulation platforms.
  • Familiarity with Python, C#, or other development languages relevant to engineering software.
  • Experience in project delivery consulting or supporting field engineers with technical solutions.
